TR 144 – PRO, Transverter for the 2m band

QRZ Now - Fri, 07/06/2018 - 7:46am

Over 25 years of experience in development of new transverter technologies led to this masterpiece of VHF technology.
Implementing technological innovations and expertise in a timely manner and combining them into a state-of-the-art product is a thing we have succeeded in doing in a very impressive way.
It’s a challenge for us to extend the limits of what is technically feasible and to put this into our products. Ranking first worldwide and improving our products continously are a matter of course for us.

Well-equipped RF transceivers are now widespread and offer a performance that can hardly be compared to what VHF / UHF or SHF come with. For that reason, transverter setups are well established in professional and semi professional field to achieve a optimal combination of outstanding parameters, such as very high reception dynamic, and comfort of use. So it’s possible to set up a high-performance station, adapted to the individual requirements. These advantages are already used by many contest and EME stations as well as radio services.

The Linear Transverter TR 144 – PRO is the youngest transverter of our TR-family and satisfies many criteria so that it’s not necessary to open and reconfigure the interior anymore. Due to the many years of experience and a lot of information from our customers we have decided to revise the proven TR 144 H +40 completely and implement some very frequently requested features. The revision of the TR 144 – PRO was focused on operational reliability thus creating an all-rounder with above-average performance. A new inserted LO + / – 0.5 ppm, a 2nd RX IF jack and the possibility to use a dual antenna system are part of the functionality and to work with the proven a 10 MHz reference.

The Circuit design of the new transverter TR144 -PRO is based on long-term experience of its predecessors TR144H + 40 and TR144H. The basic concept has been retained, the panel adapted to the new requirements and  the individual components redeveloped. Aim was to adapt TR144-PRO for most popular HF-Transceiver with just a few configuration steps and thereby be useful and  universal.

For example, the very robust input stage with appropriate mixers was kept but supplemented by a new IF amplifier. The power amplifier is a new development and provides a better IM3 at the same output power and almost the same efficiency. More new features are remote controlling via a serial interface, the configuration using two buttons and the output of all important data on an easy-to-read display. Due to modern processor technology it’s possible to expand and add new features of the TR144-PRO by an easy-to-realize firmware upgrade.

New features

  • Status readout with an easy-to-read LCD-Display
  • New Local-Oscillator with VCTCXO and +/- 0.5 ppm stability and  phasenoise better than -155 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz
  • Output from Local oscillator for a second converter or synchro receiver or predistortion downconverter on software defined radios
  • Second independent IF Receiver port to connect a second receiver such as Spectrum readout, SDR receiver or a „sun and moon noise meter“
  • Two equivalent HF-Antenna ports free configurable as receiver port  or transmit port or two independent antenna systems
  • Monitored power amplifier with several protection circuits
  • A lot of possibilities to configure the transverter for the most popular HF-transceivers
  • Free configurable delay time of the internal sequence generator and open drain outputs for maximum flexibility
  • Possibility to control the transverter with serial interface direct with PC (not RS232)
  • Internal Blower now temperatur-controlled

Well-tried functions and features

  • Input for external reference frequency for synchronizing to 10 MHz source and automatic changeover if an adequate power level is detected
  • The internal antenna relay provide an Isolation of typical 70 dB
  • Intermodulation >35 dBc @ 20 W PEP by new designed RF power amplifier with newest LDMOS technology
  • Infinitely variable transmit gain adjustment on front panel
  • Spurious rejection is better than 60 dBc, achieved by using an 5th order low pass
  • Usable for all modes like SSB, PSK, FM and many more
  • Low noise preamplifier with typical 0.9 dB NF and an OIP3 of about 40 dBm

A close look at the MFJ-1708SDR T/R switch

QRZ Now - Thu, 07/05/2018 - 7:42am

“Want to use your SDR as a panadapter while you’re operating your transceiver? The MFJ-1708SDR lets you do that by connecting the SDR antenna while your transceiver is receiving, and then grounding your SDR antenna while transmitting. I show several tests including actual operation. It’s pretty effective.”

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

SDR transceivers are great, with colorful waterfall displays that accurately present everything there is to see across the band at a single glance. If you want to know where the activity is, who`s generating splatter, what`s happening in the DX window, how wide your audio is, or what frequencies are clear for calling CQ, it`s all right there!

Unfortunately, it`s information you won`t get from your conventional radio without wasting a lot of time tuning around. Fortunately, you don`t need to get rid of that perfectly good rig to go SDR, thanks to miniature wide-band SDR receivers like SDRplay’s RSP family — now available at a station-accessory price. All it takes is a convenient way to pair one up with your transceiver. That`s where the MFJ-1708SDR comes in. Here`s how it works . . .

Your transceiver and SDR unit share the same high-performance antenna system. This arrangement allows you to simultaneously watch and listen. Then, when you key up to transmit, the MFJ-1708SDR cuts off and grounds the SDR antenna line, providing your SDR with bullet-proof protection from damaging RF. It`s the perfect plug-and-play solution for upgrading your shack to wide-screen living color.

MFJ-1708SDR uses the PTT signal from your rig to initiate the switching, but as a failsafe measure, built-in RF sense circuitry will provide a measure of safety if the PTT connection is lost.

Click Here for MFJ-1708SDR application examples!!

Radio Amateur to Pay $7,000, Face Restricted Privileges to Settle FCC Interference Case

QRZ Now - Wed, 07/04/2018 - 1:10pm

The US Department of Justice and the FCC have reached a settlement with Brian Crow, K3VR, of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, to resolve allegations that Crow intentionally interfered with the communications of other Amateur Radio operators and failed to properly identify. The core component of the settlement calls on Crow to pay $7,000 to the US Treasury, the FCC and US Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania Scott W. Brady announced in separate July 3 news releases. In addition, Crow’s Amateur Extra class license will be restricted to Technician class privileges for 6 months, and he has agreed to discontinue contact with the individuals involved in this case. Crow’s Amateur Extra privileges will be restored after 6 months, “if no new violations have been found,” the FCC said.

“Amateur Radio licensees know that the rules require them to share the airwaves, which means that bad actors cannot plead ignorance,” FCC Enforcement Bureau Chief Rosemary Harold said in the FCC release. “This settlement is a significant payment for an individual operator, and it sends a serious message: Play by the rules in the Amateur Radio band[s] or face real consequences. We thank the US Attorney’s Office for understanding the importance of this type of case and pushing it forward to ensure a resolution that included strong penalties for substantial violations of the law.”

The settlement resolves a civil complaint (USA v. Brian Crow [No. 17-595]) in Federal District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania to recover an unpaid $11,500 fine that the FCC imposed on Crow in a 2015 Forfeiture Order.

“Allowing licensed Amateur Radio operators the freedom to converse with others in an orderly fashion and without unwanted disruption is one of the missions of the FCC,” Brady said. “This complaint identifies one such individual who intentionally interfered with other law-abiding Amateur Radio operators.”

The FCC recounted in its Forfeiture Order that it had responded in March 2014 to “several complaints of intentional interference” on 14.313 MHz, and that Commission agents used radio direction-finding techniques to determine the transmission sources. According to the court complaint against Crow, FCC agents tracked transmissions to Crow’s residence and monitored them for approximately 3 hours and heard him transmit slow-scan television (SSTV) signals and a prerecorded voice transmission of another Amateur Radio station on the frequency.

The FCC said it worked with Brady’s office to craft the agreement with Crow arising from its Forfeiture Order “that found his behavior violated the Communications Act and the Commission’s rules.”

According to Brady’s office, the claims that the settlement resolves “are allegations only, and there has been no determination of liability.

The US Department of Justice and the FCC have reached a settlement with Brian Crow, K3VR, of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, to resolve allegations that Crow intentionally interfered with the communications of other Amateur Radio operators and failed to properly identify. The core component of the settlement calls on Crow to pay $7,000 to the US Treasury, the FCC and US Attorney for the Western...

FA-VA5 600MHz Vector Antenna Analyzer Kit

QRZ Now - Wed, 07/04/2018 - 8:17am
Introducing the new high precision 600 MHz Antenna Analyzer for measurements of antennas, cables and other one port devices. The new VA5 is a portable, full-featured Vector Measuring Device with a frequency range of 10 kHz to 600 MHz, with the added benefit of a USB port for connection to a computer.

The designer, Michael Knitter DG5MK, has taken feedback from users of the previous VA4 instrument and incorporated many of the requested new features in the VA5, whilst maintaining high performance and excellent value for money.

  • Frequency Range 10 kHz – 600 MHz
  • Small dimensions 15 x 8.5 x 2.2 cm – fully portable
  • User friendly – intuitive menus
  • Large display with good readability
  • Low power consumption (up to 40 hours from 2 AA batteries)
  • SOL Calibration function
  • USB-interface with support of the DG8SAQ VNWA Software
  • Real time clock with backup capacitor
  • Audible buzzer alert for minimum SWR alignment

The FA-VA5’s graphic display shows the complex impedance, standing wave ratio, complex reflection coefficient, capacitance and inductance.

Vectorial measurement means that, unlike a scalar instrument, not only the SWR is measured and displayed, but also the value of the impedance, including the signed imaginary part. The so-called SOL (Short, Open and Load) compensation is used for the calibration of the device and provides precise measurements in different configurations.

FA-VA5 Technical Datasheet

New Feature – USB-interface

The new USB-interface allows follow-on processing of measurement data, a feature that was top of the wish list for many Radio Amateurs. Michael has collaborated with Dr. Thomas Baier, DG8SAQ, to introduce support for the VA5 in his well-respected DG8SAQ VNWA software application. The combination of FA-VA5 and VNWA Software will allow all kinds of one port measurements included in the software. One example is Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) to help find defects in antenna installations. Ths USB-interface also enables the user to carry out future firmware updates to the VA5.

Complete Self-Assembly Kit

The FA-VA5 is sold as a complete kit including a pre-assembled PCB with pre-programmed microcontroller, graphic display including backlight, and a USB module, fitted in a specially designed enclosure.

The kit also includes Short, Open and Load calibration elements, which are usable up to about 100 MHz. A high-quality calibration kit, covering a frequency range up to 600 MHz, and with Load parameters individually measured, is also available from our Webshop.

Final assembly of the kit is considered to be of medium difficulty and consists of fitting and soldering just 12 through-hole components which should take under 3 hours. Download the manual which shows clear and straightforward assembly instructions, and demonstrates the quality of measurements displayed:

English Language Assembly and Operation Manual

Please note that we are awaiting delivery of the Assembly and Operating Manuals, due by 10th July. VA5 orders will be shipped once Manuals are received. If you are happy to download the Manual please state this at time of order, and we will ship without delay.

Baker island 60m Update ! by W8GEX

QRZ Now - Wed, 07/04/2018 - 7:53am

Baker Island KH1/KH7Z: Should be on 6m at their sunset and sunrise the next two
days. They told me they would operate FT8 FOX & Hound mode.
Some operators have been having trouble with the WSJT-X fox and hound mode.
So please read below.

By Lee, KY7M
1. Make sure your computer clock is accurate – this is critical for success on FT8 and other digital modes.
If you don’t already have one, install a time program like Dimension4 or Meinberg to constantly update
your computer clock.
2. Download and install WSJT-X v1.9.1 for your operating system
at https://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/wsjtx.html
3. Make a regular FT8 QSO on the standard FT8 frequencies shown in the WSJT-X “Frequencies” tab
under File>Settings>Frequencies to be sure you have the program working correctly with your equipment.
4. Add the KH1 DXpedition FT8 frequencies from http://www.baker2018.net/pages/plan.html to WSJT-X
under the File>Settings>Frequencies tab as follows:
a. Right click on the “Frequency” window and in the box that appears, click on “Insert”
b. Leave “All” for IARU Region, pick FT8 for mode (it is at the bottom of the mode list), then insert the first
frequency “3.567” and click “OK” or just Enter
c. Right click again and add the next frequency on the list by highlighting over the last frequency you
entered, and repeat until all have been entered
5. Activate the “Hound” setting on the “Advanced” tab of File>Settings in WSJT-X
6. Type in the full call of the DXpedition in the “DX Call” field – KH1/KH7Z
7. Click on “Generate Std Messages” on the bottom right of the main WSJT-X screen which will only show
the truncated “KH7Z” in the messages generated – do not edit it!
8. Make sure you are consistently copying KH1/KH7Z by seeing if you are decoding their transmissions
on the even second sequences of 00 and 30
9. Pick a transmit frequency either by typing in a number in the Tx XXXX Hz box or by holding the Shift
key while you click with your mouse above a spot on the WSJT-X waterfall (look for a clear spot) – in
either case the frequency MUST BE ABOVE 1000 Hz!!!
10. In the “Band Activity” window, double Click on “KH7Z” at the end of a CQ or a signal report with a time
ending in 00 or 30 (even) to activate your transmission cycle which should show a time ending in 15 or 45
(odd).
11. Your first transmission should look like this: 180315 Tx 2450 ~ KH7Z KY7M DM33 (showing your
callsign and grid) with the time in the left column ending in 15 or 45
12. If your transmissions time out after a certain number of minutes and the “Enable Tx” button is no
longer red, click on it to restart transmissions.
13. Once the “Fox” at KH1/KH7Z gets your call into one of his QSO streams, you will see your transmit
frequency move below 1000 Hz about the same time you will see your call and a signal report from the
Fox in red.
14. Your next transmission will automatically be the responding signal report “R-xx”.
15. Then watch for either an RR73 from KH1 with your callsign in red, or you sending a repeat of your
signal report in yellow.
16. Once you receive the RR73 with your callsign, you can log the QSO because you are in the KH1 FT8
log.
If you cannot complete the QSO (no “RR73” received), read the following (thanks Mark, W2OR):
If you reach a point in the QSO exchange where the expected Fox “RR73” message has not been
received, you should continue to send the Hound “R-xx” message up to four more times, and watch to
receive Fox’s “RR73”. After this, if the “RR73” message has still not been received, you can abort the
attempt and assume that a new QSO exchange will be necessary.
To initiate a new QSO, you may (or may not) find that your Hound computer program is locked into the
previous QSO attempt – – that is, locked in frequency, locked on the old callsign, and locked in the old
message sequence. Here is one of several work-arounds:
17. Manually clear the “DX Call” box info
18. Manually clear the Message board of callsign information
19. Move your Hound Tx frequency back to 1000 to 4000 Hz
20. Move Rx frequency for Fox back to below 500 Hz
21. Ensure the full DX callsign is entered into the “DX Call” box, i.e. “KH1/KH7Z”
22. Click on the “Generate Std Msgs” button
23. Go back to Step #10 above and try again
Finally, don’t forget to uncheck the “Hound” box when you go back to do normal FT8 operating!
If you have basic problems with getting the WSJT-X program to work, get on the reflector
at wsjtgroup@yahoogroups.com and ask your question or talk to your local club FT8 expert. There are
plenty of experienced folks who can help.

North Huntingdon Ham Radio operator settles case with FCC

QRZ Now - Wed, 07/04/2018 - 7:38am

by MEGAN GUZA

A well-known Westmoreland County ham radio operator has agreed to pay $7,000 to the federal government to settle allegations he intentionally interfered with other amateur radio operators on a particular frequency, officials said Tuesday.

The Federal Communications Commission originally levied a $11,500 fine against Brian Crow in July 2014, according to FCC records.

Crow, 58, of North Huntingdon, also failed to use his call sign as required by federal law.

When interviewed by FCC agents, Crow allegedly claimed he hadn’t been home or using his radio at the time of the disruptions.

Tuesday’s settlement, which closes the four-year case, also requires Crow to cease contact with the other radio operators involved in the interference and reduces his operating license to a lower level for six months, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Scott Brady…..READ MORE

Radio ‘hams’: The legacy of Iraq’s amateur operators lives on

QRZ Now - Tue, 07/03/2018 - 7:53am

A community of clandestine radio enthusiasts remains active inside the country

 by Sofia Barbarani

Ahmed Al Amshawi was just 17-years-old when he first discovered the underground world of ham radio in his native Baghdad in 1996. A brotherhood of Iraqi men from all walks of life united by a common, clandestine passion: amateur radio communication.

One of Iraq’s first ham radio operators is thought to have been King Ghazi in the late 1930s, paving the way for the rest of Iraq.

Saddam Hussein was in power when Ahmed first picked up the crackling microphone that would connect him to the outside world. The adrenaline rush he felt lives on with him today. So too does the hobby and its enthusiasts.

“It’s like a drug in the system, once you take it you can’t leave it,” says Ahmed, now 40, sitting at a coffee shop in Baghdad’s Mansour neighbourhood.

At the time, Saddam’s regime had prohibited ham radio operators from using their equipment – typically a transmitter and a receiver – at home. Instead, licensed operators were made to gather in government-sanctioned communal rooms where they each took turns having conversations with fellow ham radio operators. Meanwhile, the government listened in.

“If you tried contacting foreigners without a licence there would be serious consequences,” says Ahmed.

If caught without a licence while “hamming”, an operator could be accused of espionage. The penalty? Execution.

But even today, 15 years after the fall of Saddam and with the development of a wave of new forms of communication, there remains some 150 licensed ham radio operators, proud members of a largely unknown community, inside Iraq.

In the 1990s, Iraq was agonising under the weight of sanctions – a financial and trade embargo issued by the UN in response to Saddam’s hasty invasion of Kuwait. A devastated economy and a severe shortage of food and medication had brought ordinary Iraqis to their knees. Diseases from contaminated water and high rates of malnutrition, especially among children, were common.

Ahmed, like other ham operators, found a way to communicate Iraq’s hardship to the rest of the world. They believed they were providing a vital public service for their fellow Iraqis, he says.

“We relayed messages to the world,” says Ahmed, whose call sign was YI1AHC. Call signs were used as a means to identify transmitters. YI stood for Iraq, A stood for Ahmed and HC for Hotel California….READ MORE

Radio Amateur in Japan Completes Worked All States on 6 Meters

QRZ Now - Tue, 07/03/2018 - 7:34am
  4 X 7el yagi array @21m  (stack spacing : 6m high and 7m wide)

Tac Hirama, JA7QVI, has completed all requirements for the Worked All States (WAS) award on 6 meters. New Jersey was the last state he needed to work, and he managed a moonbounce (EME) contact as well as a conventional ionospheric contact.

It’s quite possible that JA7QVI is the first radio amateur to earn WAS on 6 meters from Japan, although that cannot be confirmed. Completing WAS on 6 meters was a major goal for him, Hirama said, and an Earth-Moon-Earth contact with Andy Blank, N2NT, on June 17 clinched the deal. He’d been working on achieving WAS on 6 meters since 1977.

JA7QVI now has accomplished WAS on 10 bands, 160 through 6 meters.
