SDRuno release V1.32 due out in the coming weeks

QRZ Now - Fri, 05/17/2019 - 8:56am

“This weekend at Hamvention (Dayton, Ohio) Andy, Mike and Steve from SDRplay will be showing an early version of Diversity reception running in SDRuno with an RSPduo.

The RSPduo gives users the ability to implement receiver diversity as it contains two independent tuners that are phase and time synchronous. Depending upon the usage case and reception conditions, diversity can give substantial improvements in reception performance, particularly in a mobile multipath fading environment. There are many different types of diversity, but they all basically rely upon de-correlating the signal between two antennas. This de-correlation can be achieved through different polarisations or spatial separation.

It’s important to be aware, that the key to getting decent gains from diversity lies in having the correct antenna setup and if you get it wrong, you can actually make things worse! That said, in some circumstances, the improvements can also be dramatic.

Here’s a bit more about what’s going on. In a multipath fading environment, signal reflections can combine in anti-phase in a way that results in the signal being cancelled. This is called a deep fade. If we have two antennas that are separated by ¼ wavelength at the frequency of interest, the spatial separation can help ensure that whilst one antenna is in a deep fade, the other may not be. As a consequence, either by simply selecting the antenna with the best signal or by combining the two signals it is possible to make the receiver considerably more resilient to fading.

Similarly if you consider the same antenna setup but this time without multipath effects. You will end up with roughly the same level of signal power on each antenna. By adjusting the phase of one signal before combining the two paths, it is possible to ensure that the signals add in-phase and thus constructively giving a 6 dB increase in the signal power. However, the noise generated by each tuner is uncorrelated and so when the noise power is combined, the increase is only 3 dB. Therefore is it possible to see a net 3 dB improvement in the SNR as a result of combination of the two paths, which is equivalent to reducing the noise figure of a single receiver by 3 dB. If the amplitudes are not exactly equal , then as well as adjusting the phase, you would also adjust the amplitude of one path to ensure that they were equal before combination. This principle of trimming the gain and phase prior to combining the two paths to give the best possible SNR is called Maximum Ratio Combination (MRC) diversity.

It is important to understand that MRC diversity is not guaranteed to give better performance that what may be received from a signal antenna. For example, if one antenna is in a deep fade, combining the two signals will result in a degraded SNR when compared to simply selecting the antenna with the strongest signal. That is simply because, combining will not boost the signal power, but will boost the noise power. However, in a mobile multipath fading environment, MRC diversity will substantially improve receiver resilience to fading.

Under certain circumstances, the same principle can be used to cancel interference without substantially degrading the strength of the signal of interest. In this case the antenna positions are adjusted so that the interfering signal arrives at the two antennas with the same signal strength and in phase. If the signal of interest is arriving from a direction that is orthogonal to the source of interference, then the antennas will see the wanted signal of equal strength, but with a 90 degree phase shift. If the two paths are now subtracted (added with a 180 degree phase shift), then the interfering signal will cancel, but the de-correlated signal of interest will combine, thus resulting in a substantial improvement in the SNR.

One other useful application for such a setup is that given a known separation between two antennas, being able to measure the phase difference between the signal at each antenna, simple trigonometry allows for an estimation of the direction from which the signal has come. This approach is sometimes referred to as ‘time of arrival direction finding’. This technique will only work well with signals that are substantially free from multi-path.

The picture shown here shows the additional diversity controls which will be added to SDRuno.

We hope to release this diversity option for RSPduo owners in SDRuno release V1.32 due out in the coming weeks.”

Elecraft K4 – High Performance Direct Sampling SDR

QRZ Now - Thu, 05/16/2019 - 2:27pm
Elecraft K4 OVERVIEW

A direct-sampling SDR you’ll love to use

Our new K4 harnesses the latest in signal processing while retaining the best aspects of the K3S and P3. The resulting user interface makes the technology transparent, allowing you to focus on working the world.

160-6 meter, all-mode coverage & dual RX

The K4 includes dual receive over 100 kHz to 54 MHz. Since it utilizes direct sampling, there’s no need for crystal filters in the K4 or K4D (see Models, back page). For extreme-signal environments, we offer a dual superhet module (standard in the K4HD).  An internal VHF/UHF module is also planned.

High-resolution mini-pan for each receiver

Our advanced fine-tuning aid, with its resampled bandwidth as narrow as +/- 1 kHz, is displayed separately from the main panadapter.  You can turn it on by tapping either receiver’s S-meter or by tapping on a signal of interest.

Simple operation and setup

The K4 features a large, full-color touch display, combined with a rich set of real controls. Per-VFO transmit metering makes split mode completely foolproof. Band-stacking switches and per-receiver controls are both intuitive and versatile, adapting to operating context.  Usage information on these and other features is just one tap away, thanks to our built-in help system.

Rich I/O complement

The rear panel includes all the RF, analog and digital I/O you’ll need to complete your station.  All K-line accessories are supported, including amps,  ATUs, and our K-Pod station controller. The HDMI video output supports an external display with its own user-specified format.

Full remote control from multiple devices

The K4 can be 100% remote controlled, via Ethernet, from a second K4 as well as a PC, notebook, or tablet. Panadapter data is included on all remote displays.

Modular hybrid architecture

The K4 adapts to your needs, with three models to choose from:

  • Basic K4 with wide-range dual receive
  • K4D with diversity receive
  • K4HD with a dual superhet module for exceptional dynamic range

You can upgrade or add options as desired, or as new technology becomes available.  This extensibility applies to software as well. The K4’s powerful, fast-starting CPU provides unlimited expansion opportunities.

Fast signal processing

The RF signal chain in the K4 incorporates parallel hardware processing of data streams, including a dedicated DSP subsystem. This, combined with silent, PIN-diode T/R switching, ensures fast CW break-in. Data and speech-processing delays are also minimized.

Standard DSP features include easy-to-adjust, per-mode RX/TX EQ; clean, punchy RF speech processing; full DVR capabilities; and several built-in data decode/encode modes. Direct-sampling technology results in an ultra-flat passband response for clean RX and TX audio. Since the signal chain is software-defined, the DSP can be field upgraded to add new algorithms and operating modes.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

KAT4 ATU

The KAT4 ATU has a nominally 10:1 matching range. It includes 3 antenna jacks, any one of which can be selected as an input for one or both receivers.

Internal VHF/UHF module  (future option)

An expansion slot is reserved for a high-performance VHF/UHF module, with output of approximately 15 W. This module will support all modes.

Kit version

A no-soldering kit version of the K4 is planned for later release. Builders will learn about advanced radio technology as they proceed. All modules are pre-aligned and tested.

MODELS

The K4 adapts to your needs, with three models to choose from.

Model K4 Model K4D Model K4HD Basic K4 transceiver provides 160-6 m, all-mode coverage; 100 W output; five receive RF sources; and wideband dual watch, allowing the main and sub receivers to be set for the same or different bands. Adds KDIV4 option, with a second set of band-pass filters and additional direct-sampling ADC module. This allows the two receivers to use different antennas – a requirement for diversity receive. Having two sets of band-pass filters also optimizes signal handling when the receivers are on different bands and/or antennas.   Includes all of the above, plus our dual superhet module, the KHDR4. Ideal for competitive field day, contesting, and DXpedition stations. Each superhet receive section includes two crystal filters: one SSB/data bandwidth, one CW bandwidth.  The superhet’s 8 MHz IF has excellent dynamic range, so additional crystal filters are not required.

First Ham Satellite — OSCAR 1 — will Join AMSAT’s 50th Anniversary Celebration at Dayton

QRZ Now - Thu, 05/16/2019 - 8:35am

A working prototype of OSCAR 1, Amateur Radio’s first satellite, will be on display at AMSAT’s Dayton Hamvention® booth. AMSAT’s exhibit will be in Building 1 (Maxim Hall) at the Greene County Fairgrounds and Expo Center in Xenia, Ohio. OSCAR 1 (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio) was launched into orbit in 1961, at the dawn of the Space Age. Built by a group of California-based radio amateurs for about $60, OSCAR 1 was the first nongovernmental satellite. It transmitted a simple “HI” in CW for nearly 20 days and was heard in 28 different countries. W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, recently had to troubleshoot a problem with ARRL’s OSCAR 1 in preparation for its Dayton appearance in a special “OSCAR Park” display commemorating AMSAT’s 50th anniversary. He said it was a “rather humbling” experience.

“Apparently, OSCAR 1 was not transmitting properly,” Carcia said. “So, I took it back into the shop, changed the power cable, and checked the transmitter. I had to tweak it just a bit.” Carcia said the satellite now functions.

Only three OSCAR 1 satellites were made. One was launched into orbit, of course, while the Smithsonian Institution houses the other. “Assuming it doesn’t get bounced around too much en route, it will be transmitting a chirpy ‘HI’ on 145.224 MHz,” Carcia said. “The load is a 50 W resistor, so you can copy it about 50 feet or so away from the source.”

AMSAT will present Amateur Radio satellite operation demonstrations outside the main entrance of Maxim Hall, 8 AM – 4:30 PM, on all three days of Hamvention. “AMSAT will be demonstrating actual contacts with the operational amateur satellites,” AMSAT said in its weekly AMSAT News Service newsletter. “We especially want to invite youth to make a contact via an amateur satellite. All are invited to observe, participate and ask questions.”

AMSAT will hold its forum in Room 2 on Saturday, May 18, starting at 12:10 PM EDT. AMSAT Vice President of User Services Robert Bankston KE4AL, will moderate the session.

The FCC is Not Reinstating a Vanity Call Sign Fee

QRZ Now - Thu, 05/16/2019 - 8:13am

An erroneous report this week suggested that the FCC planned to again impose an Amateur Radio vanity call sign application (regulatory) fee of $70 for the 10-year term. This incorrect conclusion resulted from an incomplete reading of the May 7 FCC Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in the matter of the assessment and collection of regulatory fees for fiscal year 2019.

Although the Schedule of Regulatory Fees does show a $7 annual fee for Amateur Radio vanity call signs, a boldface heading in that section of the NPRM states, “REGULATORY FEES. This section is no longer is effect as it has been amended by RAY BAUM’S Act of 2018…” Section 9(e)(2) of RAY BAUM’S Act gives the Commission discretion to exempt a party from paying regulatory fees when the FCC determines that the cost of collection exceeds the amount collected. A new section 9(e)(1) incorporated the Amateur Radio vanity fee exemption from FCC rules into the statute.

The NPRM makes clear in several other places that regulatory fees no longer apply to Amateur Radio licenses. The FCC eliminated the regulatory fee for Amateur Radio vanity call signs in 2015.

Yaesu FT-3DR C4FM/FM Dual Band Transceiver

QRZ Now - Wed, 05/15/2019 - 11:23am
Yaesu FT-3DR

Yaesu FT-3DR 5W C4FM/FM 144/430MHz Dual Band Digital Transceiver Reservation

The new FT3DR provides reliable 5W RF power output in compact design and light weight from factor – W2.44” x H3.94” x D1.28”/ 9.95oz (282g). Battery power-saving settings are available for each frequency band with TX output power level (5W/ 2.5W/ 1W/ 0.3W) individually selectable. Even in a compact body, the user can enjoy loud and clear C4FM voice quality from 700mW of audio power. Real Dual Band Operations (V+V, U+U, V+U, U+V) are available with two independent receivers, and the FT3DR supports simultaneous C4FM digital monitoring for both the A and B bands (C4FM/C4FM standby).

The new FT3DR is designed with a high-resolution 320 x 240 dot matrix full color TFT LCD display – which clearly highlights the frequency of the operational bands. Utilizing the Touch Sensitive Screen function of the display, three one- touch-panel keys at the bottom of the display are used for changing the mode, direct frequency entry and various setting from the function menu display with ease of use in mind. With its highly visible full color display, the new High-Resolution Band Scope function is available as one of the new advanced features which enables users to monitor up to 79 channels centered around the current VFO frequency in real time. Number of channels scanned is selectable from from19ch/ 39ch/ 79ch.

The features of the C4FM digital communication which are already popular in the market such as Automatic Mode Select (AMS), Digital Group ID (DG-ID) operation, and Smart Navigation function are available with the new FT3DR. The new FT3DR supports the WiRES-X Portable Digital Node Function as well. In the same way as some other current C4FM transceivers, users can easily set up a portable digital node with the new FT3DR and the optional SCU-39 cable kit and enjoy the WiRES-X internet communication.

CAM (Club Channel Activity Monitor) function is one of the new and advanced features of the FT3DR. Up to 10 groups with 5 channels per group each, of frequency used memory channels can be registered, and whist receiving on the current channel, the signal strength of this channel and past peaks of the other channels in the group can be displayed and monitored. With a single touch of a channel bar graph, it becomes the active operating channel and the FT3DR users may immediately start communicating with other club members on that channel.

A built-in Bluetooth unit is installed in the new FT3DR. Users can enjoy the Hands-Free Operation using the optional YAESU Bluetooth headset SSM-BT10 or a commercially available product. SSM-BT10 is equipped with the PTT button and supports the voice activated transmission (VOX) function.

Other remarkable features of the new FT3DR include:

  • Wide-range RX coverage with continuous reception from 0.5MHz – 999.99MHz (A Band)/ 108MHz – 580MHz (B Band)
  • Built-in high-sensitivity 66 channel GPS receiver
  • 1200/ 9600bps APRS Data modem
  • 2,200mAh High-Capacity Li-ion Battery Pack (SBR-14LI) as standard
  • Voice Recording Function for the received and transmitting voice and audio data which can be saved as an audio file on the micro SD card
  • Simultaneous AM/FM broadcast Reception while monitoring two frequency channels
  • Micro SD Card Slot

Solar Storm Slam Dance | Space Weather News 05.15.2019

QRZ Now - Wed, 05/15/2019 - 11:14am

“The Sun gets crazy busy this week with multiple solar storms that are inbound to earth! We should feel the first of the direct hits sometime May 15 and storing should continue into May 16 and possibly through the 17th before things begin to calm down. All this rukus is due to regions 2740 and 2741 that have been firing non-sotp solar storms ever since before they even came into Earth view. Lucky for aurora photographers, they have already given us G1 and G3 level storms with aurora dipping down as far south as Wyoming and Colorado in the USA. Learn more about these regions, how they are boosting emergency and amateur radio propagation back into the marginal range, and why they could mess with your GPS reception this week!”
